We got so giddy at the prospect of these beautiful people working their killer promo styles that we almost lapsed into horrible punning, in which an attempt at making “soul” and “Seoul” work in harmony was floated and then abandoned.
But can you blame us? Just look at these fine folks:
Director Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B. Jordan at a press conference for “Black Panther” in Seoul, South Korea.
Okay, first thing we noticed: Pretty much all the Africana has been stripped from their promotional wear. Given how hard – and how beautifully – this cast was working African-inspired fashion just last week in the U.S., it’s impossible not to notice. Just saying.
Not that we have any problems with what any of them wear. Yes, even the mock turtleneck on Chadwick. He’s got a distinct ability to work this sort of look and the individual pieces all look very fine and expensive. How many guys show up for photo calls and press conferences looking like they’re in the middle of graveling a driveway? Just look at what some well-chosen semi-casual pieces can do for a guy.

We don’t know. We like it, of course, but it sure seems serious and restrained in comparison to the last few days of promotional wear. There’s something of a disconnect between the sheer panels and the rather heavy-looking feel of that tweedy fabric.
Michael B. Jordan
Hey, Boo. You got seriously upstaged by Chadwick and you look like you just realized that fact. Like we said, the standard actor guy go-to for this sort of thing is … this sort of thing. He’s cute enough to make it look good, but he’s seriously under-dressed.
Don’t worry. They all turned it out like crazy for the premiere:

Shoutout to Ryan Coogler. We don’t normally focus too much on directors on the red carpet unless they also happen to be stars in their own right, but he’s been sporting some of the most stylish male director red carpet ensembles we’ve ever seen. He’s also as drop-dead good-looking as his cast.
That is a lot of pretty.

You came back to us with this one, Miss L. It’s got that boldness to it; that Dora Milaje-esque, high-collared armored feeling that characterized so much of her promotional-wear last week. The feathers look like they’d be annoying as hell to wear, but she’s a pro, making it look easy. Once again, we bow down to her shoe choice. She’s really improved that game by leaps and bounds. But of course her hair game never needed improving on, since she routinely steps out in looks just as gorgeous as this one. Bow down to your armored, feathered queen.
Hey, Boo. You did a lot better this time. We don’t normally love all-black tux looks, but the textural differences really make this.
That is stunning. Truly. It’s the perfect marriage of ensemble and wearer. He has a real knack for making menswear-with-a-twist look incredibly chic. A lot of men would feel silly wearing this, which is why it would work on so few of us. It takes some swag and some bearing, and he’s got plenty of both. This may wind up being one of our favorite menswear looks of the year.
