Style File: Sally Hawkins, Bold and Simple in Edeline Lee and Romona Keveža

Posted on January 12, 2018

Miss Sally is fast-tracking her way to an Oscar nomination for her performance in The Shape of Water. And like so many actresses unused to the level of fashion-world attention that comes with finding oneself on that fast track toward prom night, she’s been making some interesting choices as she makes her way through the spotlight.

This really made us sit up and take notice of her. What a sharp and chic look; reminiscent of the forties, with just enough spare modernity to it to keep it looking fresh. The color is great on her. We question the matchy accessories, although we begrudgingly admit it makes for nicely unified look for pictures. We feel like the ensemble is so strong that she didn’t need to do anything more than what she did in terms of hair and makeup, but we’re interested if some of you disagree and think she should have gone with more retro face paint.

Another really strong look that somehow manages to avoid any fussiness or an abundance of effort or discomfort on her part. The brief seems to be: dresses in simple shapes and highly photogenic colors; makeup and hair underplayed. It works for her. Again, we’d normally suggest a metallic dress asks for at least a little color and possible sparkle in the head styling, but we can’t honestly say it would improve the look for her specifically. If we had to suggest any changes, we’d ask for an inch off that hem and a less serious shoe.
