Style File: Issa Rae Bumblebees it in Calvin Klein, Rosie Assoulin, and Proenza Schouler

Posted on January 10, 2018

Miss Issa has been making the awards season rounds this week, and when she wasn’t showing her support of #TimesUp at the GoldenGlobes and again at the HBO after-party, she was getting some bright, sunny feelings on in her fashion choice. Which is good, because she’s got a smile you can see from space, and bright, happy colors do great things for her.

Having said all that – and going further by saying she looks pretty great here – she did tend to keep most of her fashion this week on the simple side. One-color looks with very little in the way of frippery or embellishments. We don’t love the generic sandals, but the dress is fine and her hair, as always, looks fabulous.

This is just okay. It comes off in these shots like a slightly harsher yellow than the warm gold of the CK dress, plus the satin’s a bit hard to work and the ruffle on the bottom is a bit too large from a proportional perspective. The whole dress feels a little over-worked, like something a Project Runway contestant produced in the middle of an emotional breakdown.

This, on the other hand, is absolutely perfect for her – and perfect for an after-party. We get the sense she’s relaxed and comfortable in this. Not entirely feeling the asymmetrical “sleeve” situation, and that trailing ruffle is entirely too long, but there’s a low-key chicness about the look that really suits her.
