Saoirse Ronan Establishes the Themes of 2018 in Gucci at the Palm Springs International Film Festival

Posted on January 03, 2018

Kittens, the opening night festivities of the Palm Springs Film Festival – something of a run-up to the awards season hitting full swing – gave us many choices in regards to our first post of 2018. You see, in the hardscrabble, knockdown world of independent fashion and red carpet blogging, it is imperative that one establishes a message, motif or theme for the year to come. Would we choose a look that speaks to the importance of women’s voices in the industry? Would we open a discussion about racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and other forms of diverse representation? Would we simply objectify or ridicule a cute guy? So many choices, darlings! So many messages to send!

In the end, we picked the ugliest dress we could find.

Or rather, Miss Saoirse did. Evidently.

Oh, girl. What is your deal? Every once in a while, you pull out a truly chic or visually interesting look, but the rest of the time, you’re letting the tacky side of you have her way.

The Gucci folks made quite a showing in our year-end worst-dressed lists, so it looks like we’re in for more of the same in the year to come. Incidentally, that whole opening paragraph about choosing the first post of the year was totally made up. We just needed a hook other than “Wow, is this dress awful or what?”

If you need a metaphor for the year to come, there it is: fake news and hiddy dresses.

Happy New Year!
