SAG Awards 2018: The Ladies of “LadyBird” Turned it Out

Posted on January 22, 2018

We can’t say we love everything about these looks, but collectively, they made for a sharp and interesting picture. And strangely, despite how different all three dresses are, they somehow complemented each other.

Having said all that, we have more dislikes than likes, it would seem.

Saoirse Ronan in Louis Vuitton

Pink was the major color trend of the night and Miss Saoirse’s gown was among the more memorable of that hue. Despite the relative simpleness of the design, this looks like quintessential latter-day Louis Vuitton to us: A decent dress ruined by one dumb detail that anyone with eyes can see needs to be edited out. We are speaking, of course, of the two little things hanging off her belt sash.

PSYCH: We’re talking about the surprise party streamers, of course. It’s an awful element that only makes a simple dress look dumb.

Greta Gerwig in Bottega Veneta

We were surprised by how much we loved this, considering how much we dislike that goldenrod color on most white blonde people. But it’s such a unique and interesting design. The placement of the studs is almost certainly a bit overdone, to the point that the fabric seems to be struggling to maintain its shape holding all that weight. We’d have loved this if the background color was gray and maybe 10% of the grommets and studs were edited out.

The earrings are really pretty but they deserve an ensemble that doesn’t push them into the background.

Laurie Metcalf in Sachin & Babi

We were so disappointed for Miss Laurie. First, because Allison Janney (who we love and whose performance in I, Tonya would be an awards no-brainer in any other year) keeps picking up the Supporting Actress trophies that rightly belong to her. And second, because she was let down by a dress with WAY too much illusion netting. Everything from the bust down is great, but that yoke is simply terrible. And we hope we don’t get into trouble for suggesting this, but women of a certain age should seriously think about the effect of illusion netting under the neck and over the decolletage. It’s not bad here, but during her red carpet interviews, when she turned her head or gesticulated, it all bunched up on camera.

It’s weird how they all look better when they stand next to each other.
