Janelle Monáe at the Warner Music Pre-Grammy Party is Exactly What We Need Right Now

Posted on January 26, 2018

Oh, Miss Janelle. Never leave us again.

Not that she ever truly went away, but from our perspective (in a very broad, general way that we don’t feel like supporting with examples because that would require research and thinking, which is something we generally try to avoid before noon, but okay: Saoirse Ronan, Issa Rae and Yara Shahidi come to mind), her epic awards season poledance of last year seems to have had something of a ripple effect on mainstream red carpetry. There’s more of a vogue for whimscal, highly photogenic, unique ensembles that break the rules a little. We have no doubt there are all kinds of reasons for that (not the least of which is the current socio-cultural zeitgeist), but in our minds, Miss Janelle’s highly idiosyncratic form of fashion expression helped open up the possibilities.

We LOVE this look, of course. This is somewhat low-key for her, since newsprint textiles are nothing new and aside from one element, it’s a basic pantsuit. But the sleeve treatment takes it somewhere Elvis-ian and fun. And the red boots really tie the look together.
