2018 AFI Awards Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on January 10, 2018

Darlings, there was a smattering of pre-Golden Globes parties and other awards ceremonies that went on this weekend, which means after drowning in black gowns for the last two days, we get to take a breather, check out some colorful party dresses, sharpen our rusty claws, and clear out our red carpet backlog. Wins all around!

Allison Williams in Carolina Herrera

It’s … nice. That’s about as much positivity as we can muster, we’re afraid. We have no real crits or objections except to say that it comes off a little off-season in January and that, despite the bright colors, it just kind of hangs there.

Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet

As per the uzh, Armie’s suit appears to be just a skosh too small on him, but he’s gigantic and they both look good otherwise. Attaboys.

Emilia Clarke in J.W. Anderson

A cute dress in a great color paired with some really fun and kicky sandals. We just wish there was a statement piece of jewelry to finish it off.

Gillian Anderson in Mugler

We’re not loving her new style direction, although the glasses are cute.

Holly Hunter in Paule Ka

LOVE this. It’s sharp and stylish and just a little different, while somehow remaining totally within her slightly limited style preferences.

Jameela Jamil

Cute, but the black pumps are too businesslike for the dress.

Laura Dern in Stella McCartney

Love this way more than we would have expected, given that it’s Stella. It’s really dramatic and has a slightly sci-fi/fantasy costuming feel to it, which makes it perfect in light of the success of The Last Jedi.

Laurie Metcalf

This kind of dress strikes us as very much her style. This look isn’t all that great, but it’s workable. She just needs the dress in a richer color than that drab industrial green and a little more guidance on good accessorizing. Her bag and shoes have nothing to do with each other and the latter are terrible. Plus, she could use a good pendant to provide some visual focus.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

Perfect. LOVE the moto on her.

Reese Witherspoon in Prada

Not much to argue with here, although the “nude” pumps are making us nostalgic for four years ago, when they were the only shoes anyone wore on the red carpet.

Saoirse Ronan in Cushnie et Ochs

Girl, what the fuck is going on with your pants.

Sterling K. Brown in Musika Frère

No complaints – although a print shirt would’ve been welcome.
