We’ve noted a couple of times recently that the celebrity red carpet seems to be trending toward obviousness in its style choices, whether that’s star dresses for sci-fi movies, Santa Drag and Christmas tablecloth dresses for holiday-themed events, Vegas-sexy looks for your Vegas-sexy movie, or the very most in 1990 mallwear for your circa 1990 period piece. Some of it works, and some of it comes off really … well, obvious.
Miss Z has taken the opportunity of her circus movie promotional tour to work some big top-inspired fashion. For the most part, we’ve really enjoyed her efforts.
But we’re not feeling this one as much:
It’s pretty snazzy on its own merits although we think it skews slightly mature in its tone. But it’s also pretty clearly a play on a circus ringmaster costume (like the gigantic one on the poster right behind her), which makes it somewhat akin to showing up for a superhero movie in a high-fashion superhero costume.
It’s a great look. We’re just not feeling it for this tour or this wearer. As good as Zendaya is, we think someone like Cate Blanchett could do a better job of making this one sing.
