Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attend Christmas Day Church service at Church of St Mary Magdalene in King’s Lynn, England.
Darlings, this is what the world needs now: incredibly wealthy and privileged folks modeling fabulous outerwear and accessories on their way into church. It’s the Christmas of our dreams.
And we don’t care what anyone says, Mrs. Cathy has seriously stepped up her game. Miu Miu? For church? Girl, you go and get it.
Not that Miss Meghan is slouching on the style front. Her oh-so-apropos Treacy hat is not only as on-point as she could have gotten for the occasion, but it’s also perfectly matched to her boots (which are fab) and her bag (which is perhaps slightly too presh for the occasion).
But we really do have to give this one to the Duchess. It’s a gorgeous coat, perfectly chosen for the occasion. The fur hat is unexpected, and the all-black accessories scheme raises the sophistication level. It’s honestly one of her best looks ever.
Seeing both women together for the first time, it’s really notable to us how differently an actress is trained to present herself than a royal. Catherine had years of training for her role, which is, by definition, a more important one than Meghan’s. It requires a certain conformity and stateliness in presentation. Meghan’s got the posture and facial affect of someone who made her career in front of cameras. It’s not at all a criticism, but it’s interesting to see.
It’s fun to imagine all sorts of soap opera scenarios with this foursome, but we think this appearance indicates just how much of a force they’re going to collectively be for the monarchy in this century. The brothers learned a lot watching their parents’ respective relationships play out with the press and the public and we think pretty much every private and public decision they’ve made in the last few years have been about securing and strengthening their image in the minds of the public.
In other news, we’re loaded up on egg nog and cookies at the moment, but we’re also hard at work on our year-end best and worst-dressed lists, which should launch starting tomorrow. We’re also hard at work on a Doctor Who review, which should also be up some time tomorrow. Also: if we’re feeling ambitious, we may even get another costume analysis of The Crown up before the year is out. And finally, we’re aware that the comments section suddenly got very difficult to access and we’re in touch with the peeps involved in order to find a solution. Due to the holidays, one might be slow in coming. Sorry!
