So much for our recent prediction that Mary Louise would be making sober, professional style choices this awards season:
We see this as an attempt to meld Meryl’s own low-key style with something exuberantly red carpet-appropriate. It’s an admirable attempt, but it never stops looking like a somewhat forced one. The entire ensemble looks great if you mentally edit out the feathers. Looking at the runway shot, we can see that the coat can work, so long as it’s belted and not paired with pants, but the way Meryl opted to wear it makes the trim look silly and incongruous. Interesting to consider, but we’re gonna have to say the look doesn’t truly work.
It’s really, really good. Our review can be heard here.
