Kristen Wiig in Marc Jacobs at the “Downsizing” Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on December 19, 2017

As we predicted, the red carpet in the post-Weinstein era has gotten somewhat sober and professional.
Despite our decade-long call for more glamour, more style, and more risk-taking on the red carpet, it’s a move that makes perfect sense to us. Yeah, all-black red carpets are going to make our jobs a little harder this awards season, but for once, our impulse to advise more color and sparkle will be tamped down.

Miss Kristen has navigated these waters by snagging herself a stark black-and-white gown that also happens to be loaded with personality and visual interest:

It takes a pretty good picture, but it feels a bit off-season for this time of year. And the white lining of the skirt it tremendously distracting. Why wouldn’t that be black? Doesn’t that make more sense?

But hey, it’s bold and interesting. It has a slightly formal, slightly glamorous feel. It checks off all the boxes. We realize that’s damning it with faint praise, but as we noted, these aren’t easy waters to navigate right now. Despite the quibbles, she did okay.

Nothing about this film interests us all that much. It smacks of trying hard to be profound about modern life.
