Kerry Washington Avoids NerdStyle at the 2017 Breakthrough Prize Awards

Posted on December 05, 2017

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington attends the Breakthrough Prize Awards (“the Oscars of Science”) ceremony at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

We wouldn’t presume to know what the style guidelines should be for an actress attending a science prize ceremony. Even so, opinionated types that we are, we expelled a mostly silent “Kerry, no!” under our breath when we saw this.

And honestly, we couldn’t tell you why, except for some prejudicial ideas about what a science awards ceremony is “supposed” to be, a topic on which we have absolutely no direct knowledge or experience. At first glance, we thought this came off a bit frivolous for the event. But obviously showing up in some shimmering gown wasn’t on the menu here, so what else is a ladystar to do but go for a pretty, photogenic look? They invite stars to events like this because they presumably want a little bit of glamour and press for the event, so she’s probably exactly right to show up in a little party dress. It’s really – almost oppressively – springtime for this time of year, but that’s not unusual; especially for Celebrity Style, Western Edition.

Having said all that, the black and white bands around the waist are pretty awful, no?
