Jessica Chastain Goes a Little Basic for the “Molly’s Game” Madrid Premiere

Posted on December 05, 2017

We’ve noted before that she’s essentially dressing like her character in this film for its promotional tour. The look is classic, lacquered, high-glam sexiness.

But in this instance, we’re afraid the bad lighting and heavy-ass makeup is not doing the job of distracting from the dress’s basicness. And those shiny side panels are truly awful. This kind of look is well within her wheelhouse -and she looks amazing in practically every scene of the film, working looks just like this – but this one really let her down. The details just couldn’t come together. That’s the thing with basic glam. You have to get it exactly right or it can look cheap.

We watched a screener of this the other night. We’ll be reviewing it in an upcoming podcast, but the short version is: It’s competently told in an entertaining style that lapses into cliche more often than can be considered good. She gives a seamless and highly watchable performance. But we wouldn’t call any of it truly awards-worthy.
