Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards: IN or OUT?

Posted on December 04, 2017

Miss Cate has thoughtfully provided us all with something frivolous to chew on today, so we don’t have to think about less-frivolous matters for the next four minutes, minimum; ten, if you’re in a super-procrastinating kind of mood. And who isn’t on a Monday?

Anyway, consider this:

It’s a pretty pink holiday sweater over a ballgown skirt. Even weirder, the top of the ballgown skirt matches the sweater. We don’t know why we’re describing it to you, since you can see perfectly well what it is, but some ensembles need to be described out loud, just so you can get a handle on what you’re seeing.

What we’re seeing? A juxtaposition that feels a bit forced, rendered in a style that doesn’t strike us as the best one for Cate. We think someone like Zendaya might have a better shot at this style than Cate, who seems a bit uncomfortable in it. She can pull off quirky stuff with a girly undertone, but when she does, it tends to have a bit more of an edge to it than this.

But that’s just us. And you?
