Today, as on so many days, we got up and asked ourselves, with a growing sense of urgency, “What is happening in the world of models on the red carpet?” And the answer is the same as it is on so many days:
Something sort of tacky, ostentatious and overdone, in the “high-priced call girl” mode. That’s what’s happening in the world of models on the red carpet. It’s a look. Not a chic one, but a recognizable one. For all their skill at working garments for runways and photographers, very few of them have decent style instincts. In this case, nothing here is particularly terrible on its own, but each aspect of the look is too bold and attention-seeking to be paired with the others. She clearly felt the need (or contractual obligation) to festoon herself with Bulgari for the occasion, but the whole look would be greatly improved by a major scaling back on the jewelry. Barring that, she could have at least picked some more low-key shoes and the same dress in a black or neutral color. We don’t usually argue for lack of color, but if you’re modeling pounds of jewelry like you’re working on The Price is Right, you best tone things down a bit.
