Tessa Thompson’s Off-Beat and Fabulous Interpretive Style, at the Governors Awards

Posted on November 14, 2017

Altuzarra had a really good showing this week, which leads us to believe the studio will be pushing a LOT of product onto the awards season red carpets to come. We tend to dislike tricky necklines on the red carpet, since they pull focus away from the stars’ faces, which is ostensibly where most of it should go. And we can even admit that this particular neckline is definitely over-designed, with the pearl embellishments being the point at which it steps over the line.

But Miss Tessa (and her team, presumably) knows how to interpret a look in a way that isn’t quite intuitive. The dress is gorgeous on its own, but the neckline might’ve made us a bit more critical about it, but the way her head is styled gives the top half of the look this utterly fabulous melange of Afro-Caribbean and Elizabethan-lite styles. The juxtaposition is spectacular.
