Selena Gomez Goes Blonde and “Bad Girl” at the American Music Awards

This feels like a “Sandy at the end of Grease” moment:

Every true star knows that one should mark various milestones and turns in one’s life by manipulating your public image. Miss Girl overcame a kidney transplant and a breakup this year, only to have new speculation regarding her romantic life reach feverish pitches. It’s an “all eyes on me” moment for her and she took advantage of it. We can’t salute that enough. Attagirl.

Do we love the look? Meh. It’s a cliche from top to bottom, but it’s well rendered and she looks great in it. The blonde? We’ll call it a phase and wait for it to end. But that’s all beside the point. This is pure image management and it’s well done; a shallow but effective declaration of personal strength and looking forward. “It’s a New Selena,” say the potential magazine cover taglines.

Or she could be back to form within days. Either way, she gets press, she makes a statement, and she looks great. Win-win-win.

Granted, there’s this whole “scandal” about her lip synching during the show, but come on, people. KIDNEY TRANSPLANT. Give a girl a break. Talk about her hair.
