“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Star Rachel Brosnahan Cutens Up for BUILD Series in NYC

Posted on November 30, 2017

If you aren’t familiar with Miss Rachel (late of House of Cards), she’s currently wowing us in Amazon’s new series from the creators of Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. More about that below, with a review from us coming very soon, but the upshot is, we are SMITTEN. She’s adorably funny and sharp in the role and she gets to wear some truly stunning mid-Century fashions.

But for now, let’s stick with the modern-day fashions she’s wearing to promote the previously cited T Lo obsession of the moment:

This is, admittedly, skirting right up to the line of “a lot of look.” And we may not love overly juvenile looks on grown women, which this also skirts right up to the line. But if you’ve seen even ten minutes of the show and role she’s promoting, you’d see how “Gilmore Girls-esque tweeness with a slightly retro tinge” is a pretty on-point style direction in which to go. The dress is really cute and we say that even though it has ruffled lace cuffs. But the midnight blue velvet has a richness and sophistication that cuts some of the sweetness. Really, it’s the shoes and girly hair that need rethinking here. You can wear a dress like this without looking like you’re going to a 6-year-old’s birthday party circa 1964, but you’ve got to make some grown-up, modern styling choices.

She’s clearly working a specific sort of girliness (which is, as we said, somewhat on point for this particular poledance), but this one has a slightly more sophisticated vibe. Or maybe we’re just loving those shoes, which are kind of hot. The dress is pretty cute too, but we could do without the big white bow.

We’ve seen the first four of its seven episodes and we’re telling you: it’s definitely T Lo-recommended. Witty, funny, sweet, cute, and gorgeous to look at, with a pseudo-Joan Rivers as its heroine and some fabulous mid-Century Barbra tracks as the soundtrack – what more do you need to know to get started? We’ll have more to say soon.
