Nicole Richie Somehow Makes Her Particular Brand of Cray Work for Her

Nicole Richie makes an appearance on “Extra” wearing her House of Harlow 1960 brand.


Recently, we came to terms with the fact that Miss Nicole has a knack for combining pieces that really don’t work together. As in, they don’t work together on other people and … they don’t work together on her either. But somehow, she makes the idea of wildly mismatched or incongruous ensembles come off all soignee and stuff, instead of just looking like someone who has no idea how to dress herself. We’ll call it the Little Edie effect.

To wit:


No, that doesn’t work in the conventional sense at all. And we’re pretty sure we’d hate each piece on their own, because one is a turtleneck, that most vexing and Satanic of garments, and the other appears to be a sleeveless suede dress with fringe and that’s just ridiculous when you spell it out like that.

And yet, we can’t stop looking at it. We get the sense that her real talents as a fashionista come from truly knowing both her public persona and how it comes across to people, as well as having a fairly deep and studied understanding of her body; its proportions, strengths, color matches. In other words, she knows who she is, how people see her and what she can work and get away with. The result is that her mismatches come off highly curated rather than the choices of someone clueless about fashion.

No, really.
