Director Martin McDonagh and co-stars Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Frances McDormand attend the “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” photocall during the 2017 Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy.
Lest you think we’re being prissy little snobs about this, we are DELIGHTED by these shots. No one here gives one flying fuck about fashion. Now, we tend to think the majority of film stars should probably put some effort in when promoting their films. In fact, we have a history of getting annoyed with them when they don’t. But let’s face it: Woody wasn’t going to show up in a suit and Frances sure as hell wasn’t going to show up in a skirt and heels. And given the title and subject matter of this film, we don’t think it would have made much sense for them to do so. We definitely do not subscribe to the idea that actors should show up in character or in costume, but we don’t think that’s necessarily what’s happening here. These actors are showing up as themselves, and their very low-key and TOTALLY un-curated style (and yes, all of them represent a particular style type) is the right way for them to go for this particular event. \
We love fashion, obviously. And we think a great deal of celebrity red carpetry requires some effort. But there are times and places when such artifice would actually work against the marketing of the film and its stars.
Besides, the total we-don’t-give-a-shit-edness is hilarious. And at least Woody’s not in his pajamas.
FRANCES MCDORMAND IS OUR SPIRIT GUIDE.
