We were all set to do a “Haha! They hate each other! Just like Joan and Bette!” kind of jokey post, but then we saw the pics and realized how wrong and unfair that would be. These two legendary actresses don’t hate each other at all.
They politely tolerate each other. Feel the carefully cultivated public warmth, darlings.
Aw, we’re just teasing. These two broads look awesome:
Jessica Lange in Gucci
We would rate Miss Jessica’s red carpetry as “work-a-day” more often than not. She tends to pick unfussy gowns and dresses in a limited range of colors that she seems to have settled on some time ago. We can’t recall any true disasters on her style C.V., but we can’t say we recall any triumphs either.
But this? Surprisingly dramatic and eye-catching. It has the feel of an updated ’40s Hollywood gown, the likes of which Joan might’ve worn herself. We don’t take it as some sort of strict homage, however. Just that she took this opportunity to glam herself just a bit more than normal. She looks fabulous. Love the hair.
Susan Sarandon in Zac Posen
Miss Susan, however, couldn’t be accused of doing a Bette homage with her style. Then again, why would she want to? A grande dame, but no fashionista or style icon, our Bette.
This is also pretty great. It fulfills the one style brief she seems to have for every single situation: BOOBS. But we can’t fault her for playing to her strengths. There are a multitude of actresses in her generation who are helping to redefine what your seventies look like, but dear God, she is leading the pack, isn’t she?
We’re surprised to find that we love the fringey neckline and puffy shoulders. They’re not always our favorite kind of thing but they really help make this dress into something more interesting than just being body-con.
