VMAs 2017: Millie Bobby Brown Goes All-In on Rodarte

Posted on August 28, 2017

There’s a lot of work on display here:

And, we suspect, a lot of thought behind the look. It has a sense of studied, grownup sophistication with touches of youth and whimsy that come across – we have to be honest here – a bit precious and curated. Put it this way: We think Millie is a young woman who’s very much into fashion and likes to opt for quirkiness in her style. We don’t doubt that this look reflects a lot of her true preferences. But it also comes across like a stylist or costume designer’s idea of a stock “quirky budding fashionista with spunk” character. The insane rufflery, and the hair jewelry, and the boots, and the strangely Natalie Pormanesque head styling – it’s a lot of look. To our way of thinking, the styling needed to be considerably relaxed so a cute young girl can rock her lace-up boots and gothy cocktail dress in that way only young girls can. Let her breathe a little, style team.

In other news, we can file this in the ever-expanding “Rodarte pieces that really work on the red carpet” folder, which remained empty through most of the last decade, but got a lot of entries in the last year or so. We see you, Rodarte.
