We always tend to love Miss Krysten’s style choices, even though she limits herself to black and red on a fairly consistent basis. Janelle Monae does largely the same thing (with black and white), but we’d argue that she does a better job of really exploring what she can do with her style while staying inside the boundaries she’s set for herself. Krysten doesn’t really do that. She tends towards these colors, we suspect, because they look so amazing against her own coloring. It’s served her well, but we’re starting to think she needs to mix things up a bit.
This is, in many ways, a very typical KR jawn. It’s red, it’s bold, it’s sexy, and it’s weird. She’s all about high impact, and we suspect it’s because – again- her looks respond well to it. But we don’t know, you guys…
In a way, it almost feels a little perfunctory, although we fully admit we’re layering our own reactions on top of it. But we can’t shake the sense that she’s in a “I’ll just throw on some weird red thing” rut in her style. The impact is still there, but the returns are diminishing. And since we’re being bitches, we might as well keep going: the makeup is looking stale and a bit harsh. We definitely think the “goth Snow White” thing has served her well, but, without suggesting a total overhaul of her style, it might be time to let another facet of it catch the light, yes? Time to shake things up, we’re thinking.
But then again, this isn’t about what we think, is it?
