VMAs 2017: Katy Perry Makes a Statement in Stéphane Rolland

Posted on August 28, 2017

So Miss Katy had herself a night – and a ton of costume changes – as she hosted the 2017 VMAs. We’ll run down her stagewear later, but since her entrance piece was starkly eye-catching and way more traditionally red carpet than her more dazzling stage getups, we figured we’d give it a spotlight to kick off the week. But here’s the thing: it’s dramatic, sure. It’s photogenic and eye-catching. But we’re all about the initial impact when it comes to promotional style and we have to be honest about our first reaction.

“Meh. Her boobs look like punctuation.”

Seriously, her torso looks like it’s quoting something.

It’s an okay – and just okay – red carpet gown, but literally the only thing providing any visual interest is the one thing doing the most work to make it look dumb. The neckline/bust/shoulder sitch is just silly-looking and unfabulous. Worse, it tops off a gown that’s utterly generic otherwise.

And the Aaron Carter tribute hair is truly awful. It’s time to say it: she’s one of those gals who can’t work a pixie.
