Ava Duvernay, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Storm Reid and Chris Pine promote “A Wrinkle in Time at Disney’s D23 Expo.
You’ve already heard our thoughts on the trailer itself. Now it’s time to turn to more shallow matters and take a look at what all the principals wore for the promo event. Line up, stars. Your judgment is here.
Mindy Kaling in Christian Siriano
It’s cute. This tends to be the basic shape and style she prefers above all others. The fit is really wonky all over, but it’s not a bad idea for a promo appearance like this one. You can certainly pick her out from far away.
Reese Witherspoon in Isabel Marant
Also cute in that very Country Club way of hers. Although truth be told, this looks a bit more casual than even her street style. We suppose she didn’t want to come off too try-hard in this setting. It’s an approachable look that just barely skirts up to the “I’m a mom, just like you” message.
Check out Miss Oprah, getting all high-fashion. We don’t know who she’s wearing, but O clearly wanted to work up a little bit of edginess to her look. We don’t love the asymmetric hem at all. And the top half looks flimsy and (a word one should never use when discussing Oprah) cheap. We like the idea of this look, but the execution isn’t great. Love the bangles. Not sure about the shoes at all.
Adorable. The heels are high and the hoops are big, which is a lot for a 14-year-old to pull off in a promotional setting like this without looking precocious. But the jumper and blouse are both sweet enough to downplay any attempts to grow up too fast. Personally, we think the shoes look a little goofy with the dress, but only because they have a much more sophisticated and grown-up feel to them. She might’ve been better taking a page from Elle Fanning and getting herself a clunky pair of platforms.
Why, hello there, Mr. Pine. We’ve long bitched at you for dressing decades older than your age – and while we can’t claim this ensemble exactly shrieks of youth, you nonetheless look quite hot wearing it. We try so very hard not to use this term (it’s actually not that difficult), but needs must, as they say: Between this and Wonder Woman, he is officially the Woke Bae of Hollywood right now.
But he needs to trim the wolf-man beard.
More shots from the event:
We tend to avoid fashion critiques of directors, but Ava’s dress is pretty spectacular.
