If Rihanna is a master of hi-lo fashion, then Miss Kristen would have to be considered the master of the butch-femme style; which she usually translates as “tee-shirt with a skirt and boots” or some such variation. More often than not, it tends to work for her, mainly because, like Rihanna’s use of hi-lo, it’s a style that suits her physically and emotionally.
But sometimes, even your go-to style lets you down. To wit:
While we love a really good juxtaposition that plays with ideas about feminine style, this one’s not doing it. For one, that skirt’s so dreamlike and ethereal, we’re not sure you can toughen it up with oppositional pieces. Second, it’s kind of a silly-looking skirt out of context. It needs to be among its own kind. Third, if you’re gonna pair it with a deliberately incongruous piece, a plain black long-sleeved crop top just sort of … sits there. It’s okay, but it doesn’t really set the skirt off (and vice versa).
We don’t know… the face and hair look great, but we’re just not feeling this look.
