Cannes 2017: Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann at the “Okja” Photo Call

Posted on May 22, 2017

It’s always a blessing when Pope Tilda gives us something to kick off our week of red carpet coverage. Over the weekend, we checked in on her nicely odd ensemble for Okja’s premiere, but it’s Monday morning, and Pope Tilda in a crisp suit with a retro feel seems like a good accompaniment to whatever engine-gunning caffeine-based beverage you need to get the day started.

Even though it’s got the same stark minimalism and slightly exaggerated silhouette the Pontiff prefers, it’s still a surprisingly conventional choice for her, made more so by the neutral pumps. Granted, it seems to be deliberately lacking buttons, but except for that and a few other minor tweaks, this could’ve come out of Queen Elizabeth’s 1950s traveling wardrobe.

We like it for being just a little off, but the details tend to bug. Not so much the lack of buttons as the too-long skirt, the half-assed belt and the flare of the jacket, which is just a skosh too exaggerated to our eyes. Some thought into securing a belt and pair of shoes that would work to pull this together would’ve been a good idea. We’re stumped, though. What kind of shoes or belt would make this work? We’re asking. Sip your caffeine and get back to us on that one.
