Cannes 2017 Style File: Nicole Kidman in Dior Couture and Calvin Klein

Posted on May 23, 2017

Like Elle Fanning and, to a slightly lesser extent, Jessica Chastain, Miss Nicole is having a Good Week on the style front. We didn’t much love her Rodarte, but that’s not surprising. The point is, she rebounded from that with two pretty great looks for her.

That’s … kind of unique, to be honest. It looks like the dress was grown on her, like moss. The colorful, earthy feel isn’t her usual bag, but that’s part of what makes it so eye-catching here. It’s like a wood nymph’s cocktail dress, and she seems to innately understand that on some level. We’re not sure about them with this dress, but we love the sandals.

We like this one significantly less. Like Elisabeth Moss’s moto-over-a-bridal-gown look, the tutu is something you better get exactly right if you plan on wearing one anywhere but onstage with the rest of the corps de ballet. This one sits too high on her waist and is completed with a too-short bustier and highly distracting straps, which tend to make the top half look like a 2xist undershirt.

And are we being too harsh when we say the shoes are hideous? We’re asking.
