Zoe Saldana Knows Exactly How to WERQ a Superhero/Sci-Fi Premiere Red Carpet

Posted on April 25, 2017

A salute, darlings! A salute to Miss Zoe Saldana and her admirable sense of red carpet weirdness. She doesn’t always land on chic, but she has a long history of knowing when and how to pull out the cray and make it work for her. Since she’s something of a sci-fi queen, she’s especially good at working this particular form of red carpetry, which is practically de rigeur at your superhero/sci-fi franchise premiere.

To wit:

Zoe Saldana attends the London Premiere of “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.”

That is all, quite frankly, just a bit much for us. Although we have to give Ulyana Sergeenko some credit for figuring out a way to combine the puffy sleeve AND the cold shoulder trend in one garment. That’s some MC Escher-like response to a design question no one else was asking, let alone answering. And it looks like it’s not even physically possible. We don’t love it, but we can’t stop staring at it.

The bust is just plain unfortunate, but we suppose once you go all in on the design elements, a simple portrait or sweetheart neckline wasn’t going to cut it. The skirt feels a bit overdesigned to us, but again, this is a dress that wants to really GO THERE so any complaints about it being too much sort of miss the point. We guess what we’re saying is, we don’t like this dress from a design perspective so much, but as a way of using style to promote an image or a project, she couldn’t be nailing it any better. You WERQ your gothy space queen Morticia weirdness, girl.

Just, maybe with better footwear than that.
