Translating the Trends for Spring 2017: Ruffle It Up, Girl!

Posted on April 24, 2017

Kittens, Lorenzo won’t be satisfied until he’s examined every single spring 2017 runway, spotted every upcoming trend that every fashionista should know about, and then searched every single online retailer until he could find the very best, most stylish, and (in most cases) affordable ways of interpreting said trend for your own damn self. He’s worked his way through pinks and yellows, bright blues, oranges, khaki, stripes, florals, and gingham, not to mention trench coatskitten heels, loafers and oxfords, and wedges, so you have no excuse for not being your best, most stylish self this season. Lorenzo has done all the leg work for you.

This time around, he’s tackling the ever-present and currently trendy RUFFLE.

Alberta Ferretti | Alexander McQueen | Altuzarra | Anna Sui | Brock Collection
Christian Dior | Christian Siriano | Deplozo | Dolce&Gabbana | Erdem
Gucci | House of Holland | Jacquemus | Marc Jacobs | Michael Kors Collection
Mulberry | Oscar de la Renta | Preen | Roberto Cavalli | Rochas
Rodarte | Tome | Ulyana Sergeenko | Viktor & Rolf | Zimmermann

As you can see from the above collages, quite a few designers were feeling the romantic vibe this spring, sending a ton of big, girly ruffles down the runways, in an array of garments and styles. Some were frilly and flouncy, some were bold and declarative, some were retro and cutesy. As with so many trends, it’s way more adaptable than you might think at first glance. Ready to go shopping? Then let’s start with the basics:

Because you really can’t go wrong with a cute ruffled springtime frock. Also, you will probably be sick of the word “ruffle” and its variants by the time you get to the end of this post. Anyway, when asked to pick his favorites, Lorenzo cried a little. He loves them all a bit too much. The point to this selection is that a ruffle can be floaty and flimsy or big and bold or sexy and sultry. There’s no one way to do a ruffle and Lo thinks the selection above represents some of the best options and styles for this trend, for the dress-minded gal.

If the above seems like to much of a commitment, you could always opt to girly up only half of your look, in which cases, it’s time to hit the section full of…

Adaptable and fun, flirty and sexy to long and flowy. The kind of skirt you wear depends entirely on your mood. Lorenzo thinks the ASOS options are cute and affordable good bet, but also can’t help falling a bit in love with that Jason Wu, or the simple preppy J Crew skirts, or the sweet little Kors number…

This is why it’s dicey to ask Lo for his faves.

But if that’s not the half of your body you want all ruffled up, perhaps you’d be happier checking out …

Now THIS is where you’ll find the serious ruffled action. And don’t worry. If none of the above appeal to you, there are non-blouse-like ruffled tops to choose from below. Because Lo loves you so very much and can’t bear the thought of you going ruffle-free this season. Anyway, the ruffled blouse may just be the most adaptable of the ruffled garments. It can look business-like, or hipster-ironic, or modest-to-a-fault, or even sexy and sassy. It all depends on what you pair it with, from jeans to mini-skirts to suits. Lo decided on a TON of options, not only because these are the most versatile and stylish of the ruffled items here, but also because the ruffled blouse is probably the most practical garment for interpreting this trend. It just works, on a huge range of women.

But hey, if you’re still looking for that one perfect ruffle, Lorenzo took some time out for picky types such as you. Check out:

Ruffled rompers! Ruffled jackets! Ruffled jumpsuits! Ruffled shorts! Ruffled tops which are not blouses although damn if we can tell the difference sometimes! Ruffles, ruffles, ruffles, darlings! YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR NOT WEARING RUFFLES.

Come on. There’s some super-cute stuff here. The shorts are adorable, but the suits and jackets, not to mention the bathing suits, make a great way to work a little ruffle into your life.

What’s that? You STILL haven’t found the perfect ruffle for you? Then you’re looking in the wrong sections, doll. You want:

Because a cute little ruffled slide or tote bag is a thing you didn’t even know you wanted until now, is it? Don’t forget: trends don’t have to be limited to your clothes. If you love the idea of a ruffle but think it looks unfortunate on your body, then girl? Get yourself some ruffled sandals or a ruffled purse or even just an easy-breezy ruffled scarf. The ruffle possibilities are endless!

And now we will stop say “ruffle!”
