Oscars 2017: Janelle Monáe Takes Things Down A Notch at the Vanity Fair Party

Posted on March 01, 2017

We’re really sighing, by the way; not just typing the word “sigh.” And it’s for two reasons.

First, because this look is so fabulous it makes us sigh, and second, because Miss Janelle will almost certainly be taking an extensive break from high fashion red carpetry for a while after this.

So let’s enjoy the show for a bit:

We know there were some kitten rumblings that perhaps she had overstayed her red carpet welcome, which tends to be said about at least one star by the end of every awards season. In a way, we could see their point, because Janelle’s style is both a lot to take and restrictive to the point of repetitive. Near-daily postings on her latest wildly patterned B&W extravaganzas thrilled the hell out of us, but we’re people who live and breathe that sort of stuff. But we can understand why some might have found it exhausting.

Anyway, those people have no taste and we should pity them silently and passive-aggressively while we gush over this possibly final big moment for a while. We don’t love everything here. The belt is too long, not to mention we’re split on the merits of grommets in fashion at all. We’re not always fans of fishnet in high fashion but this tends to work for us. The only major issue is with the bodice. It sits too low and it’s a bit too tricky for our tastes. But in most ways, this is a surprisingly straight-forward red carpet look, coming from her. She’s switch to just black with gold accents and she eschewed pattern completely, opting instead to make texture and accessories her big tools here. It’s all really working for us. It helps that she so clearly loves the red carpet, which is a refreshing thing to see in a star.

Anyway, don’t stay away long, Miss Janelle.
