Maggie Gyllenhaal attends the “Be Bold for Change, One Step at a Time” panel hosted by Keds and Refinery29 in New York City.
Looks like Miss Janelle has had an effect:
We can’t claim every B&W celebrity look is a direct result of Janelle Monae’s extensive and inventive red carpetry, but it sure feels like there’s a slight upward tick in these sorts of looks. And we don’t just mean black-and-white looks so much as highly graphic, bold and even jarring ones, which were a hallmark of Janelle’s looks throughout awards season.
At any rate, this mostly looks great on Maggie. The style – except for the hem – is retro-inspired, which makes it a good fit for her. And because she keeps her styling fairly plain for the most part, she has no problem working a couple of discordant prints without letting them overwhelm her. The extreme handkerchief hem makes our eyelids twitch, but trying to picture it with a straight hem takes a lot of the impact away. We’d rec a slightly more subtle irregular hem than that.
Still, it’s a pretty great look. Slightly goofy shoes, but that’s almost to be expected.
