Yara Shahidi’s Fashionista Cred Grows at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards

Posted on February 24, 2017

Granted, it’s not like she didn’t have fashion cred before this month. She’s been turning it out in increasingly sophisticated high-end looks for a while now, but as she’s entering adulthood, she’s really coming into her own.

To be fair, we don’t think this is perfect. It all goes south below the waist. The skirt is uninspired and the shoes are a missed opportunity. But the overall look has a grownup sophistication that she’s pulling off quite well without look precocious about it. We really like that top. Yes, even the slashes and the heavy embroidery on the sleeves. The former keeps the look from coming off too matronly. Slashed textiles is not one of our favorite design elements here, but because her styling is so classic and elegant, she’s pulling them off. And the sleeves? We don’t know. They’re just fun. And a little different.

We realize it’s not a perfectly executed look, but she’s demonstrating a Kiernan Shipka-like facility to interpret classic fashion at a very young age without looking like she’s playing dress-up.

But we would’ve put her in black pants and silver sandals for this one.
