Janelle Monáe Breaks Free, in Marc Jacobs at the African-American Film Critics Association Awards

BAM.

COLOR.

Don’t worry, she kept the cray.

She’s ventured outside her self-imposed black-and-white restriction before, but it’s been a good while since she’s done so and we can’t really recall her wearing so many different bold colors at once.  For someone who’s very big on sending messages with her style choices, we wonder if there’s something behind this one.

Quibbles? Why of course, darlings. How else would you recognize us? But they’re relatively minor, we promise. The dress really is perfect for her. But the runway shot, with the higher hem (on a much taller model) and the boots, shows a much more cohesive and complete look, to our thinking. We hate suggesting anyone mimic runway styling exactly, especially since gold metallic boots would be so wrong for her, but the black pumps and floor-length hem aren’t all that great. And it surprises us to say this about someone with such good style, but that sash is looking mighty sad. Serious zhuzhing pre-picture-taking was called for here.
