Isabelle Huppert Befuddles us Once Again at the Independent Spirit Awards

Well, we give up. We’ve been trying to get a handle on this lady’s red carpetry throughout awards season; trying to find some way to explain or contextualize her odd style; some mysterious French lady equation that would reveal all the chicness to us once we figured it out.

Turns out?

She really doesn’t have great style. There’s no mystery here. We just assumed that a mature, highly respected French actress with a tendency to wear high-end fashion must herself be fashionable. Newp. She has a bad sense of proportion and what kind of cuts work best for her. She also doesn’t seem to have a signature sense of style. She bounces all over the place on the style map. On the one hand, that means we have absolutely no idea what she’s going to wear to the Oscars tonight (Lorenzo predicted Armani Prive and Tom predicted Dior). That could indicate a free-wheeling, bold, spontaneous approach to style, but from where we’re sitting, it just indicates someone who likes big label items but doesn’t quite know how to put together a look for herself.

In other words, this all looks terrible on her.
