Matt Smith and Claire Foy Ditch the Royal Drag for the SAG Awards

It’s amazing what a wig, the right makeup and some good costume design can do. Rare is the person (and casting director, we suppose) who would look at these two and see Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

Unfortunately, while they were served with good costume design for their roles in The Crown, we’re not really feeling what’s going on here.

He’s okay. Just okay. We have no technical critiques, just a sense that he used to be a little more fun with his style and we miss that. Of course he wants to get away from his Doctor Who affiliations, so the hipster chic thing he was doing back then probably needed to be retired. We don’t mind a classic menswear look on him, since he knows how to wear one. It’s just that we miss the quirkiness.

As for Her Majesty…

Lorenzo tried to rally for this dress, but as he started listing all the various details, we both had to admit that there’s just way too much going on, and that’s not the kind of thing she needs in her style. It’s a classic case of the dress wearing her instead of the other way around. Plus, it’s borderline ugly. The neckline is unflattering and the skirt looks like it recently caught fire.

They are adorable together, though. It’ll be a major test of The Crown as a series when they have to recast the roles after season two. These two are going to be a tough act to follow.
