Critics’ Choice Awards 2016: Ladies in Black

Posted on December 12, 2016

Ladies, who died?

We realize that black is considered slimming and that most people would think it universally chic as a color choice, but when we look out at the sea of women in black attending the Critics’ Choice Awards, it feels more like a failure of the celebrity stylist community. Nevermind that it’s such a safe choice, with this red carpet, it’s gone past trendy and entered the realm of cliche. Hopefully, a bunch of celebuladies and stylists are going to course-correct for the rest of awards season after they realize everyone wound up dressing for a glamorous funeral.

Which isn’t to say any of these ladies necessarily looked terrible. It’s true some of the following didn’t quite work for us, but there aren’t any disasters. Then again, that’s to be expected when you make such a safe choice. You’ve dialed the difficulty level down to zero.

And now, brief assessments of safe choices:

Constance Zimmer in John Paul Ataker

Emmy Rossum in Giorgio Armani

Terrible neckline.

Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra

Seen it too much lately. But fab.

Kate Beckinsale in Reem Acra

Goth Cinderella.

Kerry Washington in Elie Saab

Cute, but a little underdressed, no?

Michelel Monaghan in Monique Lhuillier

Naomie Harris in Stella McCartney

Nicole Kidman in Brandon Maxwell

… the hell?

Rachel Bloom in Christian Siriano

Sadly, no.

Sarah Hyland in Vera Wang

Weird shape and neckline.

Ladies in the above post, we’ll make a deal with you. If you show up at the next awards show wearing a bold color, we will salute you with your own post. There. Now you have a goal in life. Get cracking.
