Style Double Shot: Michelle Monaghan Gets a Boost This Week

Posted on November 18, 2016

We’re going to be bluntly honest with you kittens. A shocking turn of events, we know, but we like to shake things up a bit. Today, we’re going to try stating our opinions firmly and truthfully. Because that’s never happened before.

Anyway, our point: We pass over most chances to feature Michelle on this site. Not for lack of trying on her part, since she spends a good deal of time making the rounds on the red carpet, but to our eyes, it never feels like she has a definable style or presents anything discussable in her style choices. In short, we find her style fairly dull in an Anna Kendrick/Kate Beckinsale kind of way, and find it hard to write about a lot of the time. This week provided her some opportunities to step outside herself a bit and the results are some of the more notable looks we’ve seen her wear all year.

This is an exact reversal of what happened to Allison Williams at the same event. She had a beautiful dress almost ruined by clashing outerwear whereas Michelle has a somewhat generic dress made much more stylish with the addition of matching outerwear. She’s even wearing the same shoes Allison did (answering our early question as to whether they were Prada), but they work much better here. Just goes to show how tricky and wearer-specific Prada tends to be. The dress is not much at all to look at, but the coat and shoes turn it into a cutely twee little ensemble that works well for her.

We’re not going to overpraise this one. It’s a paillette-sequined gown on the red carpet; hardly a new or original look. But we love the colors in the skirt, which really take it somewhere special. There’s a glittering autumnal feel to the lower half that feels a little unique to us. It’s just a shame that the entire top half is black. We would have loved to have seen more of the colors – all of them, really – in the skirt play out in the top.

Still, it’s dramatic and high-impact enough for the RC. A lot of her stuff doesn’t quite hit the mark, but this is at least half of a stylishly glamorous look for her.
