Hunh. How about that? We’re about to get our asses handed to us by Nicole Kidman and Rodarte.
We’ve been consistently saying two things as if they were absolutes for most of the past year:
1: Nicole, you need to embrace dark fantasy looks a la Disney Witches and stay far away from frills and pastels.
2: Ladystars the world over, you need to never wear Rodarte on the red carpet because it’s way too fussy, complicated and editorial for that kind of setting.
Consider us spanked:
Ignoring the head styling, which is not good, everything else looks … pretty damn great, does it not? It’s frilly, it’s pink and it’s Rodarte and we would have assumed that particular combo would’ve resulted in a total fashion disaster with Nicole, but this all really works for us. It helps that the pink is vivid instead of pastel-y, and that there’s so much black to balance it out. The belts make a great touch to counteract what could have been an overwhelmingsly sweet look. We’d have probably rec’d different, less focus-pulling shoes, but they tend to work well by repeating the black line motif of the dress. The sleeve situation is annoying and we can’t quite be convinced on the giant bodice ruffle, but aside from those bits, this design looks great. It’s probably one of the best Rodarte red carpet showings we’ve ever seen.
