Election Day Retail Therapy: FLOTUS Coats

Posted on November 08, 2016

Darlings, we distracted you from the day with Melania-style pussy bow blouses and Hillary-style pantsuits, but it’s time to turn to the most stylish woman in the political arena to inspire Lorenzo’s next shopping trip. And while Michelle Obama has deservedly become a fashion icon mainly for her dresses, and probably has become synonymous for all time with a high-necked, sleeveless fitted sheath dress, which she made practically iconic as a wardrobe item in the last 8 years, we’ve always been impressed by the lady’s way with a coat. Especially a wool coat. They are, of course, a wardrobe standard, but Shelley O has always managed to make this humble item completely her own every time she picked one to wear.

The great thing about a FLOTUS-style coat is that it’s so eminently styleable. You can make them look radically different, depending on your choice of accessories and garments to pair them with – even if you’re talking about a brightly or brilliantly colored coat. It’s still largely a blank canvas for an outfit. If we had to pick our faves from the above, we’d point out once again that Michael Kors is a man who knows what to do for women’s sportswear. All of his look great. The same could be said of all the Ralph Lauren options. That man knows outerwear. We also like the Vince Camuto military-style coats, which strike us as especially FLOTUS-like. Also love the eggplant Elie Tahari and the pink Calvin Klein.

See anything you like, darlings? Are you in the market for a new Shelley-O style long wool coat this season?
