Style Double Shot: Cobie Smulders and Tom Cruise Poledance for “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”

Posted on October 12, 2016

Congratulations, Cobie! You’re the latest lady star who gets to stand next to and slightly behind Tom Cruise in his latest action flick! It’s a Hollywood tradition. You’re part of a proud sisterhood.

Cobie Smulders and Tom Cruise visit the Forbidden City during the promotional tour of Paramount Pictures’ “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” in Beijing, China.

It’s cute and more than appropriate for the setting. We always say this about those sandals, but an opportunity was missed to do something a little more interesting with the shoe choice. Those are fine. They’re almost always fine. But they’re so standard now that they feel generic.

But we can’t nitpick too much, since she clearly put more thinking and effort into her look than he did:

There was a time when we were a lot harder on him for his too-studied (in our opinion) normcore styles and his over-reliance on his ability to work (not to mention near-iconic affiliation with) aviator shades. And to be perfectly accurate, there’s nothing to like or defend about the lackadaisical, untucked, color-free non-style on display here. But we’ll give Tom Cruise this: he’s handled his aging well, in the sense that he’s allowed it to progress at a pace much slower than a normal humans but without any awful or embarrassing attempts to make himself more youthful and/or hip than he is. He’s Tom Cruise and this is what you’ve been getting from him over 30 years. You’ll probably never see that pretty-boy hairstyle get retired, but we wonder if and when he’ll ever allow any gray to appear.

And now we have “Leather Jacket Tom.” This, too, is a look for him that has not changed since at least 1990 or so. Whatever, Tom. Go with God. You look fine. You look like you always look. You are a product and this is one of your trademarked logos, so to speak.

Her dress is over-designed. And to be perfectly honest, in another situation, we’d probably have more bitchy things to say about it. but she’s benefitting from his sartorial blandness. He’s such a black hole of style that she winds up looking like a supermodel standing next to him.
