“Queen of Katwe” actress Lupita Nyong’o attends the Kenzo x H&M launch event at Pier 36 in New York City.
Talk about the right dress on the right gal:
We can’t think of one celebrity, model, or real person we know who would be better suited for this look than her. Kenzo’s blend of wild, mismatched prints and folk costume inspirations isn’t alway a good fit for the average red carpet denizen – and as you’ll see in a bit, most of the celebu-ladies attending this event had varying degrees of difficulty making their garments work for them. But Miss Lupita has been exploring and reinterpreting various African nation costuming traditions in her public appearances of late, so a dress like this one was perfectly positioned for her take.
A huge part of what makes this work for us is the shape, which is just odd enough to stand out, but not so strange that it looks awkward. If all of those eye-searing prints had been rendered into a standard cocktail dress, we wouldn’t have been able to yawn hard enough, but this feels modern. More importantly, this feels modern with a touch of the ancient.
And her head styling couldn’t be more flawless for it. The shoes? Not so much, although not enough to detract.
