Janelle Monáe attends the premiere of “Moonlight” during the 2016 BFI London Film Festival at the Embankment Gardens in London, UK.
We rarely say this about Miss Janelle’s style – in fact, we don’t think we’ve ever said it: She’s trying to do too much here. The tux top works and the ballerina bottom works, but there’s no scenario in our eyes where two such thematically different style inspirations work together. Especially since each take is quite literal. That’s basic men’s tuxedo styling on the top and a literal tutu and ballet slippers on the bottom. She’s so stunning that it almost works – and to be fair, each half looks great, taken on its own. But overall, it’s too discordant and literal to make for a good juxtaposition.
On the other hand, she’s serving up pure Dorothy Dandridge realness from the neck up and we’re here for that, at least.
