Annette Bening and Elle Fanning at the “20th Century Women” Premiere

Annette Bening and Elle Fanning attend the premiere of “20th Century Women” during the 2016 Mill Valley Film Festival in San Rafael, California.

They look just like mother and daughter here. They also look pretty good, but in very different ways.

Overall, we like the idea of a look like this for Annette in a setting like this one, which isn’t particularly formal. As we’ve noted many times before, celebrities who came of age before the explosion of the red carpet tend not to quite get the hang of it unless they’re extremely stylish or extremely focused on their image. Think of women like Michelle Pfeiffer or Winona Ryder. They always look puzzled and vaguely terrified when faced with that wall.

Now, Annette’s clearly not feeling uncomfortable. Or at least she’s faking it well. But this look, while good for her generally, just isn’t all that photogenic. She’s a shapeless mass of mismatched blacks. She could’ve used more color and a little more jewelry to help define the look a bit more.

We just got finished ragging on a different over-designed Prada dress, but this one isn’t so bad. We’d have had the bow removed and the straps edited before suggesting it, but we like the vaguely 1920s feel to it and that shade of pink looks surprisingly good on her.

We just can’t decide if the shoes are fabulous or too on-point.
