For spring 2017, designer Nicky Zimmerman paid tribute to the kinds of vintage-fueled, DIY fashions of ’80s club kids in her native Sydney. “We made everything ourselves; it was more about expressing yourself. We ripped up tutus, we stole dad’s shirts, found old pieces of lace. We tied, we tattered, tangled and frayed.” The resulting collection manages to avoid virtually every cliche about ’80s fashion while still giving you a bit of that “Safety Dance”-style of boho that defined the more creative and off-beat looks of the decade.
