We call this kind of look an “Oprah gown.”

It’s classic and dramatic in a grande dame kind of way, but it doesn’t overly challenge the wearer or ask too much of her – except when it comes to the wrangling of that skirt. It was the kind of gown Michelle Obama used to default to before she found her footing as a fashionista and started making more confident choices that spoke to who she was.

Anyway, this is all sounding very dismissive and it’s not meant to be. As we said, it’s a perfectly acceptable form of “grande dame” style. It suits her. She’s worn this type of look many times before so it’s clearly a preference. We don’t love it or hate it. It’s just okay. If we have to point out quibbles, we’d note that the bust is a bit more complicated than it needs to be and that all that satin is impossible to keep looking fresh after about the second hour of wearing it.
