Translating the Trends for Fall 2016: Bright, Bold Yellows

Posted on August 25, 2016

Darlings, welcome back to our series of posts translating the runway trends for fall 2016 into wearable and affordable options for any fashionista who wants to keep her wardrobe fresh without overhauling it completely. Sure, you could try and replicate the exact runway looks in a “Look for Less” kind of way, but we believe that people are better off interpreting the runway in a way that makes sense for them. Check out our other entries in the series (Purple, Leopard, and Plaid).

Onward… to YELLOW.

And not just any ol’ mustardy, autumnal yellow, but bright marigold, sunflower, and even neon yellows are all the rage this season. Yellow of any shade is one of the hardest colors to pull off, and many of us were scared away from it by a bad experience with some jaundice-inducing garment in our past. But what makes it so dicey as a garment color is exactly what makes it so perfect as an accessory or accent color. It draws the eye and brightens up a look. It reacts vividly with certain other colors. Its best complements are orange, purple, black and oxblood, which is why it makes such a good color for fall, even in its brighter shades.

Anyway, Lorenzo put his experience as a stylist and personal shopper to good use, picking out a range of fun and stylish options for you to update your look. Like any good stylist or personal shopper, he included a few things that don’t necessarily line up with his own taste, but allow for the widest range of options possible.

First floor: BAGS.

It’s a little tough for us to pick favorites here, because Lorenzo’s got such a good eye. There’s not a weak bag in the lot. Christian Siriano’s bags are classic and won’t go out of style any time soon. The same goes for anything from The Cambridge Satchel Company, which has these beautifully sturdy and stylish designs. Those Michael Kors “MK” bags are gorgeous up close.

The Neiman Marcus camel and yellow tote is chic and expensive looking. That latter point matters because right now, it’s insanely cheap to buy. Another expensive-looking option is the Reed satchel. And the SHARO tote is a head-turner. And our eye keeps going back to those Paul’s Boutique totes.

Second floor: SHOES:

It’s a lot, we know. Let’s all take a deep breath.

Our favorites: The Steve Madden flats, which we can see as the starting point for a dozen cute fall outfits. The Sperry Topsiders and Converse, because every gal needs a sassy, classic comfy canvas shoe. For something in that option but a little more grown up, there’s the Nine West slip-on. And those Cole-Haan penny loafers are just perfect. The kind of cute, sassy shoe that’s bound to get compliments. For the superheroine or drag queen (or the super-drag queen), those Funtasma boots live up to their name. Maybe those Kate Spade taxi flats are a little on the precious side, but we can’t help smiling at them. As always, there are pumps galore, but if we had to pick the best, we’d say Kristin Cavallari and Sole Society offer some on-trend choices, but if you’re looking for the classic, the Shoes of Prey options, both slim and chunky-heeled, are no-brainers.

Here’s something we’ve learned putting these lists together: Betsey Johnson makes really adorable and affordable costume jewelry. We suppose that’s not surprising, but every time we do a jewelry dive, we come up with a couple of cute Betsey designs. The flower earrings are cute, but the pineapples are really cute. And those Kate Spade options are elegant and timeless. Collar style necklaces are all the rage at the mo, so those Bauble Bar pieces are pretty much instant wardrobe updaters. But our favorite piece of this lot is the Eye Candy pendant necklace. The striped Moschino cat-eye shades are TO DIE.

You may have noticed that we’ve been putting smart phone cases in with the random accessories. Don’t laugh. It’s a legitimate way of expressing your style. And since most people walk through life with one in their hands, it makes sense to find a case that’s stylish and says something about you. We can tell you from experience, New York Fashion Week is quite the showcase for stylish phone cases. EVERY fashion bitch has one and they all want to show theirs off. Both the Casetify options are cute, but that KNOMO London case is downright chic.

The Moschino scarf unfolds to read “CAUTION DANGEROUS COUTURE AHEAD.” Because yes.

So what’s on your wishlist, darlings?
