It feels like this poledance has been going on forever. Then again, most of the other summer “blockbusters” were huge flops with somewhat limited promotional tours that seemed to end rather abruptly. Maybe this is as much victory lap for this crew as it is promo tour. Plus the whole “50th anniversary of Trek” think probably helped fuel a lot of it.
But enough musing. Let’s judge them. This will be a little tough, because there aren’t many good head-to-toe shots of the stars.
Generally speaking, the pictures from Chinese fan events and photo calls are notoriously bad for getting good shots of the outfits. Unlike the American paps, the Chinese ones seem far more interested in pictures of the stars themselves rather than what they’re wearing, which makes a certain amount of sense because you almost never see western stars wearing Chinese (or even Asian) designers when they’re touring in Asia. Given how large the Chinese cinema market is and how important it is to the big-budget tentpole films, you’d think the stars and stylists would be savvier about that sort of thing.
Anyway, Miss Zoe’s McQueen dress is … interesting. We don’t think we’d have a problem with it if it didn’t have that bejeweled sash, which doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the rest of the design. On the other hand, she’s shown a knack for picking these sorts of offbeat looks for this tour and we think they work from a thematic point of view. After all, Star Trek’s kinda known for its weird fashion.
The men are doing their jobs by showing up appropriately dressed. That’s about all we can expect, we suppose. Except for our gigantic fashion gay, Zachary, who has really stepped up his game lately. The suit’s a bit too tight, but we love him for the boldness of it. And we’re living for the footwear, which is an inspired choice.
