Elle Fanning in Marc Jacobs at Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood Event

Elle Fanning attends Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles, California.

Darlings, we are gathered here to today, to pay our respects to and then ultimately bury, this year’s most persistent style trend: forced whimsy.

Now, we’ll grant you that Miss Elle here is at least the right age and the right type to step out looking like she rolled around in an 8-year-old girl’s scrapbook before heading out the door. And if this dress had been edited quite a bit, we’d probably be okay with this look. But we’re so damn tired of random appliques and gewgaws that look like they were hot-glued to the dress. By an insane person. We could accept this dress better if all that foofaraw was kept to the skirt. Then it might have come off cool and whimsical. But that bodice looks like a junk drawer come to life. And the sheer abdomen is … well, if can’t work on a size 2 teenager, then maybe it should be dropped completely.

We guess what bothers us about this trend is not the whimsy part, it’s the “forced” part. Everything is trying so hard to look so random and sassy that it’s just … exhausting to look at. And despite our desire to put it in the ground, this trend isn’t likely to die out soon because right now, all the top name designers are doing it, which means we get to look forward to at least several more seasons of B and C-list design houses continuing the trend.

Also, those businesswoman black pumps are a total needle scratch. You’re wearing a dress that’s more or less the physical manifestation of Cyndi Lauper’s voice and you put on your MomPumps?
