Melania Trump speaks at the first day of the Republican National Convention at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
There she is…
A reminder before we dive in here that we’re here to discuss her style choices. We realize it will be practically impossible for people to comment on these pictures without injecting some political stuff into the conversation. We ask that you keep the tone light, please. In eight years of covering Michelle Obama’s style choices, we stuck to the same format: clothes, not politics. We have faith that our kittens can continue that tradition.
Now about those sleeves …
It’s a pretty good dress, all things considered. The white strikes us as an odd choice for a candidate’s wife, but almost all the women speakers on the stage last night wore white or off-white, and considering how unlikely a color choice that is for a political convention, we have to figure there was some coordinating going on. Given how dark and foreboding the tone of the convention has been, this may have been a savvy choice – even if it does treat women from very different backgrounds and with very different goals like they’re all dolls. It’s one thing to dress, say, the cast of Ghostbusters in coordinated outfits, but it’s quite another to dress a potential First Lady, a Senator, and the mother of a dead soldier in matching shades.
Having said that, there’s some interesting image-management going on here. She’s, at the very least, a highly unusual candidate for First Lady. We just spent 8 years hearing about the horror of seeing Michelle Obama’s arms, but Melania has some fairly racy swimwear and lingerie modeling pictures in her background, which means “purity” is the main item on the image-management menu right now. In other words, don’t just dress her in white, but make sure the other women are as well, in order to tie Melania to a more traditionally accomplished political woman as well as to the mother with the devastating story to tell. She’s being placed on a continuum of Republican women with this choice. And we don’t think the angelic quality of the sleeves was at all accidental. We understand why she had them pinned (or whatever), since giant bell cuffs would have been unwieldy while giving a speech, but the effect was to make her look frivolous instead of serious. And we’re surprised that the fit isn’t impeccable. C’mon, lady. You can afford to have a seamstress come in and get that right for you.
Also: She needs an eye makeup rethink.
